Installing an SSL certificate

This is an optional step. HTTP communications between AssetTrack Server and its client programs can be encrypted using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to ensure that all data passed between the mobile device and the server remain secure.

Be careful with temporary certificates

Often, our customers issue temporary SSL certificates from an internal source. This often causes problems, particularly with mobile devices trying to connect. While a desktop web browser would warn you about certificate misconfiguration, many of our HTTP calls will fail with messages that are difficult to isolate.

If you elect to implement SSL, you will need to obtain a SSL certificate and ensure it is properly configured on your AssetTrack server.

There are four steps involved in procuring and installing an SSL server certificate:

  1. Purchase an SSL certificate from a Certification Authority (CA).
  2. Generate a CSR (Certificate Signing Request) from your web server that will be SSL enabled.
  3. Enroll for an SSL server certificate with the CA.
  4. Install the SSL server certificate on your web server.

SSL on mobile devices

You typically don't have to do anything on the mobile device for SSL, but for your mobile device to make a secure connection with the web server, you will need to ensure that the CA that issued your SSL certificate is known to your mobile device.  In general, certificates issued by well-known CAs like Verisign and Thawte are recognized by Windows Mobile out-of-the-box.

To check which CAs will be recognized by your mobile devices, tap Start Menu -> Settings -> Certificates on your mobile device.
