Uploading mobile data to AssetTrack Server

As you collect data using a mobile device, the data is stored in a database file on your mobile device. This is so you can collect data without requiring a wireless connection. This also improves overall system performance significantly. When you have finished collecting data, you must upload the data to the server.

Connecting to the network

In order to upload data to the server, your mobile device must be connected to a network that can access the AssetTrack Server with which the device is partnered. If your AssetTrack Server is on your company's internal network, then your mobile device must also be able to connect to your internal network. Note: It is possible for the AssetTrack Administrator to setup a tunnel through your firewall so that you can upload data to your server via the Internet. For more information, see your manager.

Connecting via Windows Mobile Device Center

The easiest way to connect to your internal network is with a docking cradle attached to a network computer. Most devices come with a docking cradle that connects to a workstation using a USB cable or a serial cable.

*Caution
Windows Mobile Device Center can be unreliable. Microsoft has built in a lot of security protections that can often make it difficult to establish a network connection. Once you get any issues resolved, you only need to insert your device in the docking cradle to connect. But getting set up can often be confusing. See your AssetTrack Administrator, or contact Microsoft or email Asset Management International at support@amitracks.com if you have difficulty establishing a Windows Mobile Device Center connection.

Connecting via 802.11b/g Wireless

Some mobile devices come with a wireless network adapter. If you have an internal wireless network, you can set up your device to connect to the network wirelessly. This results in the same kind of connection as if you were using Windows Mobile Device Center , so the instructions for uploading data to the server are identical regardless of which method you use to connect.

*Note Using wireless adapters on mobile devices can drain the device battery. Keep in mind that if you are not actively using your wireless connection, disabling the wireless adapter will help extend battery life.

Uploading collected data

Once your mobile device is connected to the network, tap the Upload icon on the AssetTrack Main Menu to upload data to the server. A progress bar will appear showing your upload progress.

When completed, the device will display "Uploading Complete."

Accessing uploaded data on the server

When data is uploaded to the server, it is put in a Queue allowing you or your asset manager to review the data and make any necessary changes before the data is applied to your asset database, whether you are using the built-in AssetTrack asset repository or an external system like CA UAPM.  What this means is that you will not be able to see changes to the asset database until the data is published from the server queue.

AssetTrack does not allow changes to be applied directly until they are reviewed by an asset manager. This is to ensure data quality and maximize the value of your asset repository. See Scrubbing data in the Queue for instructions on using the Management Console to process your uploaded data.
