Data Collector's Guide

Who should read the Data Collector's Guide?

Anyone who collects data should check out this guide. This includes people using mobile devices, web browser users and spreadsheet uploaders who are scanning or collecting asset information and sending it up to the server for processing by the asset manager.

AssetTrack Data Collection

To maintain accurate, current asset information, you need users to capture asset information in the field.  This is the first of three main functions of an asset tracking solution: capturing changes to asset information as the changes occur.

Data collectors are your receiving dock personnel, data center technicians, field service technicians, shipping and receiving personnel, your end users, even your vendors, who you need to send in asset information for validation and writing to your ITAM or CMDB repository.

  • Vendors send newly purchased assets via electronic spreadsheet.
  •  Receiving clerks report assets hitting the dock.
  •  Data center technicians rack & stack servers and perform regular inventories.
  •  Break/fix technicians track swaps, refreshes and repairs.

All this activity must be recorded efficiently and accurately.

AssetTrack's Data Collection Tools

AssetTrack provides multiple data collection tools for different data collection scenarios.

AssetTrack iOS

An iOS app is available for iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads including barcode scanning for capturing asset information with existing smartphones. The iOS app is ideal for field users who don't want to carry another device and have to scan only a few assets at a time.

See AssetTrack iOS for more information.

AssetTrack Windows Mobile with RFID

AssetTrack supports ruggedized, enterprise-grade barcode and RFID handhelds such as the Motorola MC9190 device. These rugged devices are expensive, but well suited for high-volume scanning in rugged environments. These devices are ideal for data centers and warehouses, where many assets will be scanned. The ergonomics of the pistol-grip and performant scanners are the reason to make the investment in these types of scanners.

See AssetTrack Windows Mobile for more information.

AssetTrack Web Forms

A web-based interface is available for entering asset information via a browser. Web forms are ideal for enabling end users to perform self-inventories, verifying asset information they have in their possession. It is also idea for any user who doesn't have access to a barcode scanner or other data collection device.

AssetTrack Upload Forms

Users can upload spreadsheets of data for processing by AssetTrack. This enables users who currently use spreadsheets to collect and submit asset data in bulk, without changing existing processes.

See Designing upload forms for more information.

AssetTrack JSON API

AssetTrack supports a JSON API enabling asset information to be sent to AssetTrack programmatically. Customers use the API to automate feeds of data from vendors, auto-discovery and ERP systems. Using the upload API enables programmers to leverage AssetTrack's reconciliation and integration platform.

See AssetTrack Upload API for more information.
