Client workstation requirements

In addition to mobile devices, users can use their laptop/desktop workstations to interact with AssetTrack in different ways. This topic covers all the requirements you will need to ensure that workstations are configured correctly.

In overview, there are three distinct uses of AssetTrack from a workstation computer:

On this page:

  • Web browser access. This is the simplest requirement. Any user who needs to interact with the AssetTrack web application will require Internet Explorer. This may be an end user who wants to do some data entry using a web form or an application admin who is modifying some settings.

  • Mobile device workstations for Windows CE devices. If you're mobile users are using AssetTrack on Windows CE devices, their devices have two ways to connect to AssetTrack Server: Wireless or USB-tethered to their desktop/laptop workstation. The latter is most common. Workstation computers simply provide pass-through network connectivity for mobile devices when the devices are connected to a USB and Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC).

  • AssetTrack Console workstations. These are the laptop or desktop workstations that are used by your asset managers who will be designing forms and/or approving collected data. It will run the AssetTrack Console desktop app. Their requirements are slightly heavier than mobile device workstations.

Only asset managers or application admins will need to run AssetTrack Console. Data collectors typically do not need to use AssetTrack Console.

Web browser access

The only requirement for for access to the AssetTrack web app is Internet Explorer 7 or greater. When using Internet Explorer 10+, browser compatibility mode may need to be enabled for the AssetTrack website.

Mobile device workstations for Windows CE devices

AssetTrack Mobile is the client program that runs on Windows Mobile devices and is used by field personnel for uploading and downloading application-related data such as assets, products, employees, and so forth, to and from the AssetTrack server. A mobile device workstation is required to provide connectivity from the mobile device to the server. An end user's existing workstation is usually adequate to serve as a mobile device workstation.

Wireless-enabled mobile devices do not require a workstation.
